Chapter 20

Mikhail

He landed breathless in a field of waist-high, golden grass. Flying so high, for so long, left his body abuzz and his wings tingling. Or perhaps that was Severn’s gaze making them shiver because the moment Mikhail turned and tucked his wings in to keep the feathers from collecting grass pollen, Severn carved through the grass toward him. His hair was mussed about his horns, tangled from the wind, and desire set his gaze ablaze. He’d come at Mikhail like this before, on a battlefield long ago, but this time he didn’t have a blade in his hand, and a different kind of need blazed in his eyes.

Mikhail would never have believed the sight of a demon would make his body sing and his heart race for reasons that had nothing to do with battle and everything to do with needing to pull that demon close. The taste of Severn sizzling on Mikhail’s tongue, the touch of his hands, the sound of his name on Severn’s lips. These things were a strange kind of addiction.

Severn’s hand came up, slipped around the back of Mikhail’s neck, and his mouth was suddenly upon Mikhail’s, tongue sweeping, thrusting, answering Mikhail’s. The kiss was hard and fast and over too soon. Severn pressed his cheek to Mikhail’s. He smelled of warmth and demon. His breaths raced, making his chest beat against Mikhail’s. Severn was everywhere suddenly, all around and inside Mikhail’s head, the taste of him, the feel of him. Mikhail wanted more in ways that continued to terrify him. His love was a living, breathing thing inside him. He could feel it in every beat of his heart, every breath he took. He could not describe such things with words, but perhaps another way.

He reached up and cupped his demon’s face, then brushed his mouth against Severn’s, gently teasing Severn’s open with his tongue, and kissed him as though he were an unobtainable dream, as though this kiss meant more than a meeting of lips and bodies but was instead a meeting of eternal souls.

Severn’s arm came around, under his wing, and hauled him close.

Love was not a curse but a miracle. It was the reason this war had to end, the reason they could not fail. Love was everything.

“I want you, here in this grass…” Severn panted against Mikhail’s ear.

He clutched at Severn’s coat, then plunged his hand down his back, cupping his firm rear. He wasn’t sure what he wanted, to drop to his knees and take Severn between his lips, or to have Severn take him. The need was blinding, muddling his thoughts.

Severn’s teeth nipped at Mikhail’s throat, then skimmed down the curve of his neck. By Haven, Mikhail pulled him so close he couldn’t tell where he ended and Severn began. He’d lusted after him when Severn was an angel, but now that lust had turned into a raging inferno.

They sank to their knees, hidden among the grass—just their wing tips visible. Acting on pure instinct, Mikhail shoved Severn down into a pillow of grass.
